We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinite, perfect, and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully human. We believe that He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross as a sacrifice sufficient for the sins of the world, rose bodily from the dead, and ascended into heaven where He serves as a mediator and intercessor with the Father until He returns at the end of this age. We believe that the present ministry of the Holy Spirit is to reveal the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ; to convict individuals of sin; to regenerate the sinner who believes; and to indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.
About the Scriptures
We believe the Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments in their entirety, to be the verbally inspired Word of God, inerrant in the original writing, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of the world, and preserved by God throughout the ages to be the divine and final authority for all faith and life. The Bible, therefore, is to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises.
We believe that man was created in the image of God and that his subsequent willful sin resulted in physical and spiritual death and in the necessity of a new birth for salvation. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for salvation. We believe that without God’s gracious initiative in working in a person’s life, he or she is dead in sin and unable to place their faith in Christ for salvation. God’s work in reconciling someone to Himself in salvation is by His grace alone, and is complete and eternal. We believe that only as one receives this gift of God through personal faith in Jesus Christ is one born of the Holy Spirit and made a child of God.
About the Church
We believe that the Church is composed of all persons who have been born again through saving faith in Jesus Christ and therefore have received the Holy Spirit, becoming members of the Body of Christ of which He is the Head. Furthermore, we believe that the local church is composed of members who are believers, who with one another should be the visible expression and should fulfill the purpose of the Church in the world. We believe that baptism into water and communion are to be observed by believers in the local church, not as a means of salvation, but as pictures of spiritual realities. We believe that qualified men are given the responsibility to lead Southside as elders.
About the Christian Life
We believe that God’s work of salvation is not separate from His sanctifying power and purpose, and will eventually be evident through spiritual fruit. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor, and justice for the oppressed. With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent praying in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil. In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed. A life of faith will grow in obedience to God’s Word, and regardless of cultural or popular beliefs, will be the ultimate authority over what we say and do, and in all human relationships.
About the Return of Jesus Christ and the Eternal State
We believe in the imminent, personal, and glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ when, in fulfillment of prophecy, He will establish His reign in its fullness within time and space. This coming, at a time known only to God, demands constant anticipation, and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service, and energetic mission. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all the dead: of the believer to everlasting blessedness and eternal life in the presence of God, and of all unbelievers to judgment and everlasting punishment apart from God.
